Volunteer Opportunities

Linking people with nature by footpath along Lake Superior's North Shore.

BE AN ADVOCATE FOR HIKING TRAILS! As part of the recently-passed Legacy Amendment that gave additional funding to Minnesota's parks and trails (SHTA received a Legacy grant for our trail construction this year), the DNR is required to develop and 10-year and 25-year plan for Minnesota's parks and trails. At earlier meetings, it seemed the DNR did not understand the importance of making the Superior Hiking Trail and the North Country Trail part of these plans because these trails are not state trails but instead are developed and managed by non-profit organizations. It's important for people to participate and there are several ways to do so. 1)Attend a public listening session to voice support for featuring these trails in the state plan. There are upcoming meetings in Duluth, Minneapolis, Rochester, Mankato, Grand Rapids, Brainerd, and Marshall. 2)Provide online input to the discussion by participating in the Citizen's League Survey via the Parks and Trails Legacy Plan website. 3)Submit your comments or questions to the Project Manager or Steering Committee members. I encourge you to get involved. Thanks! Gayle Coyer, SHTA Executive Director
