| Q1: | Are permits or fees required for using campsites? Are there campsite capacity restrictions? |
| A1: | No, there are no permits, fees, or reservations required for the approximately 75 backcountry campsites on the trail. All sites are first come, first served. Most sites have room for 2-4 tents - some more, others less. Use the "The Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail, 2001 Edition" guide book for specifics. Sites are required to be shared if more than one party wishes to camp at a site. Do not put more tents at a campsite then there are tent pads available. Brushing out additional tent pads is illegal. If you are planning a trip with a large group there are multi-group campsites on some sections. These sites generally have 6-10 tent pads and were designed for large groups like scout troops. The trail guide lists these sites. They are indicated with an "M" in the campsite triangle in the Guide as well as on trail maps. Each campsite has tent pads, a backcountry latrine, a fire ring, and benches. Consider going without a fire or making only a small fire to protect vegetation. Most campsites are near a water source but there are a few "dry" campsites. The Guide lists the water source for each campsite. Back to Top
