July 22, 2008: All of the conditions posted below still exist. There is water in all the creeks and streams. Reports are still coming in that the bugs are still bad north of Judge Magney State Park, much longer than usual this year. Otherwise the trail is in good hiking condition.
July 22, 2008: There will be a walk/run race on the trail on Saturday July 26th from Silver Bay to Beaver Bay. The race starts at 8:45 am and should be over by noon.
July 1, 2008: Co Rd #58 in Cook County (Lindskog Road) is open to the Co Rd #58 trailhead but there is a culvert out at the entrance to the parking lot so it is closed. You can park on the road for day hiking but do not park here overnight. The trail from this trailhead goes southwest along the Devil Track River to Pincushion Mountain. It goes northeast to Kadunce River Wayside.
June 15, 2008: The Cascade Creek Bridge is out and washed downstream. It will likely be several weeks before this bridge is replaced. Cascade Creek is located in Cacade River State Park west of the Cascade River. Cascade Creek is between Lookout Mountain and the west side of the Cascade River Loop. The good news is that there is a 0.9 mile detour on state park ski/hiking trails to the north where you can go around the bridge area and back to the SHT main trail. The detour is posted. The creek was still high but I was able to cross the creek on some large boulders right by the bridge site. But if you feel at all uncertain about crossing the creek on boulders take the detour.
June 5, 2008: From the northern terminus of the SHT at Otter Lake Road, the first one mile of trail (on an old logging road) has been logged. A volunteer has put up stakes with orange flagging to mark the route but some hikers have been confused. But the logging road is the first mile of trail and it does lead to the rest of our beautiful trail!
April 1, 2007: the new Fifth Edition of the Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail is in! It includes maps, campsite information, water sources, and a mile-by-mile description of the trail from the start of the trail at Lake Co Rd 301 (Fors Rd) in Two Harbors to Otter Lake Rd near the Canadian border. A through-hike of this segment is 205 miles. The Guide also includes the 39 miles of new trail through Duluth built in 2004-2006. The Guide price is $15.95.
